About the book: The California Artists Cookbook unites the arts of painting, photography, and gastronomy. Included here are more than two hundred recipes contributed by scores of California artists; including Ansel Adams, Judy Chicago, Richard Diebenkorn, Claire Falkenstein, Wayne Thiebaud, and many more (see below for a complete list of contributors).
The recipes range from the pinnacles of haute cuisine to simple, but equally delicious, dishes that even the most inexperienced can prepare with ease and serve with a flourish. There are family treasures making a first appearance here, old favorites with new variations, and unique regional specialties from—of course—California as well as from all over the United States.
There is also a fine representation of marvelous but little-known recipes from Italy and France, and exotic delicacies from the Middle East, Africa, and the Orient.
The recipes are accompanied by full-color and black-and-white reproductions of paintings, graphics, and sculptures reflecting culinary themes and subject matter by many of these gourmet-artists, and there is also a suite of exceptional photographs by Chotsie Blank of some forty of the contributors in their studios or in their kitchens.
Chotsie Blank and Ann Seymour produced the entire project with members of the Modern Art Council of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Jack Van Bibber is the author of Fast Feasts, A Cookbook for Hurried Gourmets. He was the editor, with Michael Sonino, of the American edition of Great Italian Cooking by Luigi Carnacina, and, with Nika Hazelton, of the American edition of La Cuisine by Raymond Oliver.
